Alagendran Group: Moving a Live Website, Domain and Mail Server — With Zero Downtime
The original alagendran.com was built in 2021, with Zoho Mail tied directly to the old domain provider. Moving to a new Ubuntu VPS meant repointing nameservers to GoDaddy — the exact kind of change that normally breaks the website or the mailbox for a few hours.
For a business that runs partly on email enquiries, that was not an option. Here is what we actually did.

One Change, Three Ways It Can Go Wrong
A domain and server move touches infrastructure most site owners never look at — which is exactly why it is so easy to get wrong.
Email and domain, bundled together
The original site was built in 2021 with Zoho Mail wired directly through the old domain provider's DNS. Move the domain and you can break the mailbox in the same stroke — a common trap for businesses that bought domain, hosting and email as one bundle.
One DNS change, two systems depending on it
The website (a new Ubuntu VPS) and the mailbox (Zoho) both take their instructions from the same nameservers. Get the sequence wrong and either the site goes dark, mail stops arriving, or both — at the same time.
Default DNS timing works against you
Left alone, a nameserver or record change can take 24-48 hours to fully propagate. During that window, some visitors see the old setup and some see the new one — which is exactly when things quietly break.
How We Kept the Site and Mailbox Live
No single trick makes a DNS cutover safe. It is a sequence, done in order, with nothing left to the last minute.
Lower the TTL first
Days before touching anything, we lowered the DNS Time-To-Live on the existing records. A low TTL means that once the real change is made, it spreads across the internet in minutes instead of the default day or two — shrinking the risky window from hours to almost nothing.
Build and test on the new server in parallel
The new Ubuntu VPS was set up and the rebuilt site tested there before the domain ever pointed to it. Nothing went live untested — the switch was the last step, not the first.
Move nameservers to GoDaddy with every record re-created
Domain management moved from the old provider to Alagendran's own GoDaddy account. The A record for the new VPS and the MX records Zoho Mail depends on were recreated on GoDaddy before the switch, so nothing was missing the moment it went live.
Verify mail and site together, then watch it
We confirmed mail was flowing and the site was reachable on the new DNS before calling the job done, and kept monitoring through the propagation window that followed.

The website stayed reachable throughout the entire cutover.
Every enquiry that arrived during the migration reached the inbox.
Search visibility carried straight through the domain and server change.
Three Things Worth Taking Away
Check what's bundled before you move anything.
If your domain, hosting and email came from one reseller, assume they are more tangled together than they look. Map every DNS record that depends on the old provider before you plan a move.
TTL lowering is the cheapest insurance you can buy.
It costs nothing and takes minutes to set up, days in advance. It is the single biggest reason this cutover took minutes of real risk instead of a day or two of it.
Test before you cut over, not after.
The new server was proven working before the domain ever pointed to it. A migration should never be the first real test of the new setup.
